Five State Conference
Carolyn Garfein, AAUW National President presented the keynote address for more
than 70 delegates at the Five State Conference in Little Rock. Missouri was well
represented by 31 delegates. Attending from Ballwin Chesterfield were Harriett
Hirschfeld, Yvonne Morrison and Julia Triplett. Carolyn focused her presentation on
the vision and mission of AAUW. She discussed the four important “fs” of AAUW –
Focus – Fast – Flexible – and Flat, to which she added Friendly and Fun.
Other highlights of the conference included a panel of Arkansas women legislators
discussing their experiences as candidates and office holders. Dr. Berta Seitz served
as panel moderator and led the women through a group of questions related to their
personal and professional experiences. The panel members related events that
occurred which they felt were because they were women, things that would not have
happened to a man. For example, one woman with very short hair said she was often
asked why her hair was that way, as if that had anything to do with her abilities to
perform the duties of her office. The panel members all agreed that it was important to
be assertive when such situations arose.
LAF Plaintiff Lauren Mancuso presented “Personal Perspectives on Title IX” after
the luncheon. She related her experiences as a collegiate woman wrestler and her case
against University of California Davis for discrimination against women athletes. The
case is still pending.
A number of breakout sessions focused on a variety of topics including the new
AAUW research publication “Why So Few?” Other topics covered were Title IX, AAUW
on Campus, Fund Raising, AAUW’s new structure, and ERA. Julia Triplett presented a
session on Ballwin Chesterfield’s Wellston Project.
The AAUW bylaws passed at the St. Louis convention changed the structure of
AAUW to eliminate the regional directors and the regions as such. Arkansas, Kansas,
Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas chose to have a regional conference this year with Little
Rock and Arkansas serving as host. The success of the conference can be measured
by the straw vote taken in which the the group voted overwhelmingly to have another
conference in two years. Oklahoma volunteered to host.
