BALLWIN-CHESTERFIELD RECEIVES AAUW COMMUNITY ACTION GRANT
AAUW Community Action Grants provide seed money to individual women, AAUW branches and AAUW state
organizations, as well as local community based nonprofit organizations for innovative programs or non-
degree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls. Applicants must be U.S.
citizens or permanent residents
In December Sandra Murdock and Pat Shores submitted a grant application titled
"Each One Teach One", a
proposal from the Ballwin Chesterfield AAUW to the Association for funding a grant to work with Wellston
School District
's  Middle School sixth and seventh graders to develop Science Fair projects that would
culminate in an open house for school board members, parents, staff, and students.  The $7000 grant was
approved.
 Mentors from Ballwin-Chesterfield bran
ch  met 8 times with small groups of students as they envisioned,
develop
ed and completed a Science Fair project.  Two workshops and a field trip to the St. Louis Science
Center
prepared them for the science experience.  Then each mentor and student group decided what
science area to investigate for their entry in the Fair.   Finally, each group  produce
d a Science Fair project to
display at the culminating event for students, teachers, mentors, parents and School Board Members.
For years, Ballwin-Chesterfield, under the capable leadership of Sandra Murdock, has supported student
science endeavors in the St. Louis area through mentoring and encouragement of these students to pursue
innovative science projects for entry in the St. Louis Science Fair.  This gran
t allows the branch to expand this
involvement in a productive and creative way.
Sandra Murdock, Pat Shores and Julia Triplett coordinated the project.  Mentors working with students were
Joyce Alexander, Marcia Block, Bette Bude, Duane Bude, Suzanne Couch, Joan Crawford, Mary Lynne De
Grande, Erlaine Eltomi, Marilyn Fletcher, Joan Hewitt, Mary Jermak, Jayne Kasten, Helen McIntosh, John

They are from AAUWBC, West County Democrats, Eliot Unitarian Chapel, friends and husbands.

The planned Celebration held at the completion of the project took place on April 14.  Parents, students, school officials and
mentors gathered to honor the young scientists.  A certificate and medal was given to each participant, and all 22 projects
were on view.
Cookies and punch were served and enjoyed by all. From left:
