AAUW BALLWIN-CHESTERFIELD BRANCH AWARDS:  WE HONOR OUR SPECIAL MEMBERS
Nominations were sought from branch members for 2009-10 Educational Foundation Named Gift Honorees
in January.  The nominees were considered on the basis of excellent  service, leadership, and commitment
to the Educational Foundation and to the Ballwin-Chesterfield branch.  Ten members were selected and
three among these were singled out for exceptional contributions to the branch and received the
Outstanding Branch Member designation.   Ballwin-Chesterfield is very proud to honor these women.
Contributions to the Ballwin-Chesterfield Silver Anniversary Research and Projects Grant have been made
in their honor.

JOYCE KATZ - OUTSTANDING BRANCH MEMBER

Joyce is invaluable to the Ballwin-Chesterfield Branch.  In fact, one could say that
as Co-Editor of the Newsletter and Technology Chair, she is the glue that holds our
branch together.  For ten years she has produced the finest newsletter in the state.
By promoting the e-mail distribution of the newsletter, she has saved the branch a
great deal of money and has done the same for the state.  Joyce maintains an
informative website to publicize the branch.  She keeps us current about state and
national news. When anyone needs to get word out about something, whether it is
a change in plans or a Care Note, Joyce is the person we go to.  As a computer
tutor, she has helped many members solve problems.  Additionally, as presenter of
the March branch program, “What’s New 4 You at AAUW,” she brought us
information on a variety of topics.

But technology is far from all Joyce does for Ballwin-Chesterfield and AAUW.  She
is leader of the LiteratureII and Golf interest groups.  She attends and sponsors
Dollars for Scholars events, participates in the Eleanor Roosevelt Walk, and is
always ready to capture events and people with her camera.  Joyce contributes her
time and talents in so many ways. She is truly an Outstanding Member of the
Ballwin-Chesterfield AAUW.
JULIA TRIPLETT -- OUTSTANDING BRANCH MEMBER

Julie Triplett is an Outstanding Member of AAUW and the Ballwin-Chesterfield
Branch.  She is involved in so many ways.  Interest groups include Play
Readers, Play Readers Too!, Literature I, and Literature II.  She represents the
branch at Adelante as well. She always seems to have some project going to
benefit AAUW or the community.  At the state level, she is the incoming
president.  When the national convention came to St. Louis last year, Julie
spent countless hours cheerfully organizing and then reorganizing all the
volunteers.  And somehow, she manages to find time to knit beautiful afghans
for every fund-raiser.

We especially honor her for her involvement in the Wellston Community
Action Project.  Because she has read AAUW Community Action Grant
applications for several years, she could put together a successful application
for our branch.  Then she worked tirelessly with Pat Shores and Sandra
Murdock to facilitate the project in 2009.  Seeing how the children benefited,
Julie single handedly managed to continue the project in 2010.  Through her
communication, persuasion, and determination, she raised money, found
volunteers, and organized the entire project.  It’s hard to say “no” to Julie.  But
beware if she comes to you saying, “I have a good idea.”
SUE BARLEY

Sue serves the branch effectively "behind the scenes".  She has been invaluable to the
Bylaws Chair and recent Co-Presidents as a resource for bylaws interpretation on
innumerable issues.  She has helped clarify tax deductions and AAUW Funds
donations, drawing from her many years of involvement at both the state and national
levels.  She has been active in supporting LAF, working to make the Trivia Night a
success and holding a reception for donors at her home.  Sue also supports AAUW at
the state and national levels.  She has served for the last six years as state treasurer.
She was instrumental in bringing the national convention to St. Louis last year and
serves on the Breaking Through Barriers Major Gifts Campaign committee.

Thank you, Sue.
DODIE BARNES

Every time you look up a phone number in the
branch directory, you are seeing the results of
Dodie’s efforts.  For four years, Dodie has chaired
the directory committee.  Getting everyone’s name
spelled correctly and all those addresses and
phone numbers right is no easy task.  And then
there are all those committees and by-laws to
update.
In spearheading the change to the new loose-leaf
directory, Dodie has also helped save the branch
considerable money.  She is willing to help other
committees in any way possible, too, for example
preparing the program for this luncheon.  We are
grateful to Dodie for all her work for AAUW.
ERLAINE ELTOMI

Erlaine’s motto has to be: "You can’t ever be too busy to
volunteer for one more job".  She has served as Public
Policy Chair for the past four years and produced three
major community education forums on important issues,
ones that earned our Branch a Galaxy Award.  She has
also worked hard to build connections with other women’s
groups and to keep our members informed on public
policy issues.
This year, she stepped in to be the chair of the Spring
Luncheon.   She handled these major projects the first few
months of this year with a smile on her face and a sling on
her arm due to a fall.  Today the sling is gone, but the smile
and willingness to serve continue for Erlaine.

SUSAN HAYNES

Susan has been the assistant to the treasurer for
the last three years.  She handles all of the
“Dollars for Scholars” receipts and makes timely
deposits.  She also has sponsored many Dollars
for Scholars events.
Susan introduced the Schnucks program for
donations to Ballwin-Chesterfield and has
assumed responsibility for activating and
handing out Schnucks cards to our members.
This program has brought several hundred
dollars to our branch. Thank you, Susan, for all
you do.

BECKY KRUSE

Let me give you some words to describe Becky Kruse
–creative, leader, and kitchen help.  Becky is very
active in the Expressions group, and  leads many of
the creative projects for the women who attend.  She
has served as the co-chair of the Fall Brunch and the
Holiday Auction and also served as Historian.  On
many of the committees on which she has served you
will not find her in front speaking into the microphone
but back in the kitchen taking care of the details.  She
also attended and volunteered at the national
convention.  Becky is always cheerful, creative, and
willing to work for Ballwin-Chesterfield.
TERI MILLER

If we had an award for the Rookie of the Year, Teri
Miller would be our winner.  Teri joined our branch
about two years ago and immediately got involved as
a monthly coordinator for the hospitality committee.
When the LAF committee began the plans for Trivia
Night, Teri helped coordinate and collect items for the
silent auction and worked with the refreshment
committee for the event. She has served on other
committees as well, such as the Summer picnic
meeting. When there is a need, Teri steps in.
She has also been chosen by the Governor’s office to
serve on the panel for Disabled Citizens for the State
of Missouri.  Teri is positive, dependable, and enjoys
being of service to our branch.
DORIS NISTLER

If I say the words Ballwin-Chesterfield Trivia Night for LAF,
the first name that probably pops into your head is Doris
Nistler.  That’s because she is the chair, the question writer,
the promoter, and the “go to” person for this event. These
Trivia Nights have raised thousands of dollars for the Legal
Advocacy Fund.
During the rest of the year Doris served as Co-Vice
President for Programs, making sure we had an interesting
and relevant speaker--and we were in place ready to listen.
She has been an appointed officer for international
relations and holds a position on the LAF committee.  And if
that’s not enough, she is always happy to share her
musical talent with our branch at many events.   Doris is
always ready and willing to do all that she can for Ballwin
Chesterfield.

MARY JERMAK - OUTSTANDING BRANCH MEMBER

Mary is a leader in every sense of the word.  During the past two years,
while serving our branch as Co-President, she as been extremely
dedicated and thorough.  Meetings have been run promptly and
efficiently.  Mary has reviewed all of our documents for accuracy, checked
the by-laws, asked for input from committee chairs, and spearheaded the
revision of the goals of each board position. This will provide clarity and
focus for the activities of our branch.  Mary is focused on recognizing and
promoting leadership, too. She has attended State and National
Conventions and represented us well.  Before becoming Co-President,
she served two years as Public Policy chair, organizing seminars on
timely topics.  She also sponsors and attends Dollars for Scholars events.

Mary believes in the AAUW Vision and Mission and shows this in our
monthly meetings and in her interactions with other members.  And as one
of the persons who nominated Mary for this award said, “How blessed we’
ve been to have Mary’s guidance and dedication as our Co-President.”
And yes, we have been blessed to have this Outstanding Branch Member
and leader.
