OUTSTANDING BRANCH MEMBER  Dr. A. PATRICIA SHORES
It was a very fortunate day for the Ballwin/Chesterfield Branch of AAUW when Pat Shores
moved from Texas to Missouri.  We gained a tireless worker who demonstrates outstanding
speaking, writing, organizational and leadership skills.  Pat has served on numerous
committees, hosted several Dollars for Scholars events, and attends almost every Dollars for
Scholars event.  She was Treasurer for two terms, and is now completing her 2-year term as Co-
President.  She was a leader in bringing the “Each One Teach One” project to the Wellston
students this year and has also worked very hard as a committee memberin preparation for the
AAUW National Convention to be held in St. Louis.  She is a strong advocate of fulfilling AAUW’s
mission statement and has made sure that our members are kept informed on issues of
importance to all women.  Pat is not the type of person who will stop contributing her efforts
once she is out of office…..you’ll continue to see her helping wherever she is needed.  After
each branch meeting, it is not unusual to see Pat as the last one to leave the church hall
because she is busy picking up a stray coffee cups or napkins.    She demonstrates humility
and doesn’t seek recognition, but she is truly deserving of this honor.  We, therefore, are very
pleased to honor Pat Shores as the 2009 Outstanding Branch Member of 2008-9..
Mersine Kallaos (R) herself a former Outstanding
Branch Member, speaks about Pat Shores.
MARIAN BAUER joined AAUW after she retired from teaching four years ago.  She immediately
became involved as an active member, supporting EF and Dollars for Scholars activities.
When asked by Rosann Swaringim to serve on the Board as Historian, she willingly accepted
this position without any prior experience in scrapbooking, using the computer to download
pictures, or creating any of the artistic features our Publicity Book had been known to
display. With the help of the former historian, Rhea Moore, and Joyce Katz, our technology
specialist, she utilized her organizational skills and enthusiasm to master all the necessary
requirements to accomplish this task.  Marian has produced beautiful books representing
the years’ activities while serving two years in this capacity.   Currently, Marian is serving as
our International Relations Chair and serves on the committee which provides us with the
speakers many members enjoy at the Ethical Society.  While supporting Dollars for Scholars,
Marian also participates in golf and movie-group interest group activities.  She has also
attended and been an active participant at a State Conference.  We are indeed fortunate to
have such a hard-working, dedicated member as Marian Bauer to honor today.
Marsha Weppelman (L) announces Marian Bauer's award.
BETTE BUDE  has been active in Ballwin-Chesterfield Branch since she joined five
years ago.  She worked tirelessly on the Public Policy Committee and co-chaired the
Community Forums for several years.  She is presently Co-Vice President for
Programs and is doing a wonderful job.  Recently both she and her husband
mentored children for the Wellston "Each One Teach One" Project. She is an active
member of Literature One and Reading Reality interest groups. Her organizational
skills have been greatly appreciated by those who have inherited notebooks when
following her on various committees.  Now she is taking on the position of
Co-President.  AAUW is so thankful for her enthusiasm and support for our
organization.
Cecelia McFadden (L) introduces Bette Bude.
When SANDY CAMILLO found AAUW, the Ballwin-Chesterfield branch found a treasure.  From the
minute Sandy joined, she brought her energy, enthusiasm, and great ideas to everything she
has touched.  She is a member of several interest groups, including two literature groups,
bridge, and Movie Group.  She is now starting a poetry group.  She has sponsored and attended
many Dollars for Scholars events.  As Dollars for Scholars co-chair, she has been instrumental in
coordinating and encouraging others to sponsor events.  Last year, as Issues and Diversity
co-chair, she encouraged the formation of focus groups, a great idea that has led to a whole
new way for members to connect.  She supports the Educational Foundation and the Eleanor
Roosevelt Fund.  This spring she worked on the Trivia Night Committee and contributed to a
successful event.  What a great addition to our branch Sandy has been.
Marcia Block (R) speaks about Sandy Camillo.
JACKIE FLECK is an AAUW “member extraordinaire”. In 2005-2007 she was Vice
President for Programs.  In that position she was instrumental in arranging interesting
speakers that supported the goals of AAUW.  She supports the Education Foundation in
many ways. She participates in the Eleanor Roosevelt Walks, has hosted many Dollars
for Scholars events and currently is Co-Chair of Dollars for Scholars. She has served
on the Hospitality Committee as a regular monthly hostess and has shared her artistic
talents with the Spring Luncheon Committees. Also, she has cheerfully assisted in
many capacities with the Holiday Auctions. Presently, in addition to Co-Chair for Dollars
for Scholars, she serves on the Membership committee.  Jackie has a very gracious
manner in everything she does and is most deserving of this honor and award.
Barbara Butchart (L) introduces Jackie Fleck.
HARRIETT HIRSCHFELD is a member who exemplifies what service to Ballwin-Chesterfield
AAUW is all about.  She always answers the call when something needs to be done.  Over
the years Harriet has served our branch in many capacities including co-president,
hospitality chair, newsletter editor, and public policy chair.  Currently, she is serving as
Co-vice President-Membership.  She also organizes the Out to Lunch group each month.
Recently, she served as a  Dollars for Scholars co-chair, and she continues to plan
activities for this group as well as attending many of the functions.  Harriet is an active
participant in several bridge groups, Movie Group, and Lit 2, which she co-chaired.  She is
now starting a new Biography group.  Harriet has served on the Bylaws Committee for
many years.  We recognize the valuable contributions Harriett makes to
Ballwin-Chesterfield AAUW on a regular basis.  Hats off to Harriet! She deserves our
applause.
Marsha Weppelman (L) conveys award to Harriett Hirschfeld.
ROSEMARY MANLEY:   I would like to introduce our next honoree by revising a
quotation. “Thank Heaven for little girls and thank heaven for big girls like Rosemary
Manley” She joined our branch with a bang and is still going strong. Rosemary serves
as our branch’s IBC Liaison Chair.   In just four short years of membership she has
supported the Education Foundation in many ways, sponsoring Eleanor Roosevelt
walkers, chairing the Talbots fashion show for two years and attending many Dollars for
Scholar Events.  She has served on the Holiday Auction and Spring Luncheon
committees, sharing her artistic talents and always being a ready helping hand. She
serves on the Membership and Hospitality committees and is the Queen of Hearts with
her fantastic cookie recipes.  She has supported both Public Policy Forums. She does
all this in her quiet way with a ready smile. That’s our Rosemary Manley!
Barbara Butchart (L) awards Rosemary Manley
JUDY STAGOSKI  has been an active supporter of its mission since joining AAUW.  She has participated in
Dollars for Scholars events as well as chairing an event.  She has served on the Fall Brunch committee and
the Spring Luncheon committee.  She is currently chairing the Hospitality Committee and is always ready to
help, making sure everything is running smoothly at our meetings.  She attends and contributes to board
meetings and has attended the state conference in Jefferson City.  Her enthusiasm for AAUW is contagious.
She also participates in bridge and literature interest groups.  Recently she was in charge of crocheting two
hundred flowers for the hats to be worn by volunteers at the Association Convention in June.  When she isn’t
lending a helping hand to AUW, she volunteers one day a week in the St. Johns’ Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
cuddling babies.  What an outstanding and generous contributor of her time and efforts to AAUW Judy is!.
CAROL THOMAS  has served AAUW in several important ways. She was Membership Co-Vice
President. For two years she headed the Educational Foundation Committee and immediately followed
that with assuming the huge responsibility of becoming our treasurer. Carol supports our branch with
generous donations of time as well as money. She opened her lovely home for a "Holiday House
Tour" a few years ago.  She participates in the Eleanor Roosevelt Walk and is a Century Club member.
She is an active participant in the golf group as well as bridge and Literature One.  With a winning
smile and graciousness she takes part with little fanfare.  Thank you, Carol, for sharing your many
abilities with AAUW.
MARSHA WEPPELMAN has been a member of the Ballwin-Chesterfield branch for many years
and has served the branch and the Foundation in many ways. In the past, she served as
Treasurer.  Currently she is Bylaws Chair.  That’s one of those jobs that isn’t usually noticed
but is vitally important. She is our go-to person when we have a question about procedures.
The depth and breadth of her knowledge keep us doing business correctly.  She is also a
member of the LAF committee and each year has worked hard on the raffle and other LAF
activities.  Recently she has worked to make Trivia Night a success.  She supports the
Eleanor Roosevelt Walk and Individual Giving.  Marsha can be counted on to do detailed and
serious-minded tasks well and promptly.  Thanks, Marsha, for all you have contributed to
AAUW.
Marcia Block (L) conveys award to Marsha Weppelman.
MARY KAY WOLFE  has enthusiastically volunteered to offer her assistance on various committees since
the day she joined the AAUW Ballwin/Chesterfield Branch,.  She has led a Dollars for Scholars event,
participated several times in the Eleanor Roosevelt Walk, and has worked faithfully for the Educational
Foundation Committee.  She has acted as a liaison to numerous local scholarship recipients and
befriended Becky Kitcher, an AAUW fellowship student from Ghana.  In 2007 she chaired the Individual
Giving Campaign.  This past year, Mary Kay was the tireless and spirited leader of a most successful
Holiday Auction, raising over $9,000.00!  She is an active member of Movie Group and Reading Reality,
and can be seen at almost all Branch meetings with her cheerful smile.  Thank you, Mary Kay, for your
willingness to help our organization with such a positive attitude.
